SAMe is used in three important processes:
1. Methylation: Contributes methyls for activating molecules.
2. Synthesis of polyamines for cell growth, gene expression, neuronal regeneration, etc.
3. Synthesis of cysteine, glutathione and other sulfur compounds.
SAMe is concentrated in the liver and brain and is a major methyl donor in the synthesis of hormones, nucleic acid, protein, phospholipids and neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. SAMe plays an important role in various metabolic processes, facilitate the utilization of glutathione and maintains the levels of acetylcholine, which help cognitive function and prevent aging and degeneration of neurons.
In young, healthy people, SAMe is distributed throughout the body. However with the passage of time or when there is a disease, its levels are reduced. Taking folic acid, TMG, B6, B12 and SAMe levels increase. SAMe helps to synthesize phosphatidylcholine, which keeps the liquid membranes of the cells and is used by the brain to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
Researches have shown that SAMe helps to normalize mood and the smooth functioning of the joints, with no side effects. The multidimensional mechanisms action of SAMe are useful throughout the body and especially the liver. SAMe facilitates methylation enzymatic processes and stimulates hepatic levels of vital antioxidant glutathione, which leads to reducing generation of free radicals.
