In addition to its metabolic role, K contributes to the activation of K dependent proteins (VDK proteins), which are essential for blood clotting and other important biological functions such as bone metabolism, vascular health, cell growth regulation and apoptosis.

Many nutritionists believe that a subclinical vitamin K deficiency, a deficiency not so intense as to be clinically manifested by blood clotting disorder, is particularly prevalent in the general population and may contribute to the occurrence of osteoporosis and other growth-related diseases of age, including cardiovascular disease.
