The term urinary tract infection describes infections of the urinary tract caused by harmful microorganisms.
The urinary tract is responsible for the production and excretion of urine. It includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. If the immune system is weakened and microorganisms enter from the urethra into the urinary tract and are not eliminated in time then they cause infection. The infection can occur in any of the organs of the urinary tract.
UTI is more common in women because of their anatomy, as the urethra is smaller and is located very close to both the vagina and the anus.
Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria, mainly Escherichia coli (E. coli), from the colon and rectum enter the urinary tract through the urethra.
These bacteria attach to the wall of the urinary tract and once attached, they can multiply and cause urinary tract infections.
Approximately 50% of the female population will develop a UTI at some stage in their lives.
Although men do not get UTIs as often, they may take longer to treat and cure.
Prone, to urinary tract infections are also the elderly, people with diabetes mellitus.

The elderly and people with diabetes are also prone to urinary tract infections.
Regular consumption of cranberry juice is a method of preventing urinary tract infections since studies show that proanthocyanidins (substances contained in cranberries) prevent microbes from settling on the walls of the urethra.
Proanthocyanidins (PACs), a group of bioactive molecules found in cranberries, are of particular importance for the health of the urinary tract.
Studies have shown that a daily dose of 36mg of bioactive PACs exerts an anti-caking effect and prevents bacteria such as E. coli from adhering to the bladder walls.
The bacteria do not grow to cause infection as they are flushed out with the flow of urine.
Since this mechanism does not kill the bacteria, it is unlikely to lead to the development of cranberry-resistant bacteria.
Recommended daily consumption dose:
