Cascara, known as "sacred bark" or cascara sagrada, is obtained from the bark of the native Northwest American tree Rhamnus purshiana. The bark powder is traditionally used by the indigenous people of the region to enhance the peristalsis of the colon.
It contains anthracene glycosides (cascaraosides A, B, C, D, E, F, halogens A and B as well as chrysalides A and B, a mixture of O-glycosides of hydroxyanthracene including monoglycosides of haloemodin, chrysophanol, emodin and physcion) and other components such as linoleic acid, myristic acid, syringic acid, lipids, tannin, resin.
Cascara possesses mild laxative properties and is used against constipation. This action is due to the cascarosides contained. Clinical studies carried out on elderly people indicate that treatment with cascara, compared to placebo, leads to relief of constipation and increases bowel motility.
